“The North Point promenade offers visitors a unique place to gather and attend community events, while showcasing Canada’s largest port, the Port of Vancouver. The redesigned space is a Canada 150 at Canada Place legacy for the community.”
Evangeline Englezos, Director of Community & Aboriginal Affairs for the Port of Vancouver
Canada Place is a world-renowned tourist destination in Vancouver, BC.
Of the 9 million annual visitors to the city, 1 million of them arrive directly from the 200+ cruise ships that dock on its pier.
In 2016, the owners commissioned a renovation of the aging paving system and a new visual identity for the ‘North Point’ Plaza Deck, one of downtown’s most popular public spaces.
- Limited space for paving assembly due to parking and offices underneath.
- Significant drainage for heavy rainfall and near-zero slope.
- Has to absorb huge movements of cruise ships docking against it.
- All the work had to be done during the off-peak winter months between cruise seasons.
Only the permeable, resilient, and fast-installing solution from ROMEX was able to solve all these problems, and meet the constraints of the project timeline.
The North Point plaza, the very northern tip of the Canada Place pier, was reopened after a renovation that redesigned the plaza with aesthetic upgrades and a new layout to make the space more event-friendly.
The area that was renovated starts on both the west and east promenades immediately north of the
‘FlyOver Canada’ attraction and is distinguished by its new pattern of tiling.
Upgrades included the removal of older planters, installation of new and more sustainable LED lighting, a parkette feature, a new stage at the northernmost tip, and new seating.
Some of the events that are held on the plaza annually include Canada Day at Canada Place, Waterfront Cinema, Waterfront Zumba, and Christmas at Canada Place festivities.
The previous plaza space design was completed in 2001 as part of the extension of Canada Place to accommodate a longer and additional berth for the cruise ship

Almost a year ago, we established our brand Romex and we brought it to Canada, and built our subsidiary here in Vancouver, we are very proud, we found good people to deal with, they understand the benefits coming out of our system very quick and very fast. Then they brought this project on the table and said we got a chance to show the whole system coming with -our ten-year warranty to this jobsite. It was a big honour for us, finally the architects and decision makers and customer for Canada Place decided to choose us to renew the surface on Canada Place.
This site was very unique in the technical challenges that it posed, obviously, we have got the cruise ships as the main factor here, where they bump up against the sides of building, they are tied to it, they can shake the whole thing. As well as the cruise ships hitting it, you have got the vehicle weight going in there, as well as thousands of people. There is also minimal slope on here for drainage so the permeability of the product was vital in that sense, there is also low depth available so the strength of the product was vital in that sense as well. Then we have the office space below as well as the parking space so there is the need to provide insulation to that space which again impacted the depth of what we had to deal with. Then the water catchment and general rainfall in Vancouver is a big topic always, puddles forming on the surface, so the fact that our system provides that degree of permeability coupled with the light drainage on the surface. Also, this whole deck needed to be done in time for the first cruise ship arrival, our grout products are applied as a sludge and applied with a squeegee with a simple broom off finish, there is none of the typical hands and knees installation. We provide up to ten times or greater installation rates than typical grouting products. So, the challenges of this site were really something that only our Romex products were able to provide a solution to. One of the things that I personally find most exciting about Romex are the sustainability benefits that it brings. Firstly, we are a carbon neutral company and that’s rare in construction. Secondly Romex specifically provides multiple sustainability benefits, primarily it’s a product that lasts, its resilient, it doesn’t break. That means you can plan for decades not just for years. Thirdly we ship just the Romex high tech resins, the aggregates are sourced locally and that means we minimise the impact through the operation of our business and the use of Romex products. Now on another note, Romex provides exceptional water management, and that can mean water goes back into the ground instead of the sewer system which is becoming more and more of a concern as we change the climate and water falls in larger amounts in shorter periods of time. There is a variety of test specifications which were required for this particular project. Both from our traditional European standards which are tested over with the factory at the German headquarters in Europe. ISO certification. Proof of inert which means that the products are chemically inert once they are cured. They provide no leeching which was very important to a portside project such as this, to not allow any chemicals to get into the fisheries, into the sewer systems and so on and so forth. The general feedback from installers, architects and the construction team in general, has been overwhelming, from the way the product looks, to the way it was installed. We know people who regularly do this in the business say things like “hey we don’t want to do cement jointing again”, just due to speed and quality of this install. It also provides that peace of mind of top to bottom coverage from the top of the paver to the top of the bedding. Due to the nature of the sludge and ensures everyone has satisfactory jointing with no weak points.
