GOLDEN TREE

“I think its more a head-turner, a, ‘what the heck was that?’ That’s my favourite reaction” – Douglas Coupland, Vancouver Artist

Famous Vancouver writer and artist, Douglas Coupland, was commissioned to do a life-size public sculpture of Stanley Park’s famous Hollow Tree.

The Hollow Tree is an 800-year old red cedar tree that is loved by locals and tourists alike in Vancouver.

The 13-metre high sculpture was unveiled in August 2016 by Coupland himself and named ‘The Golden Tree’.

It weighs more than 15,875 kg and is located at the intersection of Cambie and South West Marine Drive in Vancouver.

ROMEX 2-component grit and gravel hardener ROMPOX DEKO-PRO was selected due to its ability to mix with local gravel to form a decorative base around the sculpture. Its use would ensure no loose stones and the ability to see the sculpture’s undulating grades from accent lighting.

The project was completed on a tight timeline to the full satisfaction of the contractor.

PRODUCT SELECTION

Permeability and durability were top priorities for this Residential project. The system comes backed by our 10-year manufacturer’s warranty and will allow homeowners to enjoy a safe and durable paved surface for years to come. Our ROMPOX ECO-FINE jointing compound added the perfect finishing touch as the resin film-free properties of the jointing material meant that the original look of the natural stone surface was preserved.

PROJECT NEEDS
  1. A highly durable system that exceeded the client’s expectations
  2. Meet City stormwater management requirements
  3. Provide peace of mind with a 10-year warranty

PROJECT SOLUTION

With multiple long-term economic and environmental benefits, the RSG 10 system has created a solid and functional surface which can deal with the local climate and will continue to serve the Homeowners for years to come. They will also continue to see a return on their investment without spending summer days picking weeds out of their joints or re-installing a jointing compound annually. This project is a great example of adopting a do it once, do it right mentality
