VANCOUVER PUBLIC LIBRARY

With views of the city skyline from a unique vantage point, the Phillips, Hager and North Garden on level 9 provides Vancouver’s first publicly accessible rooftop garden within the downtown core.

Designed by world-renowned landscape architect Cornelia Hahn Oberlander in collaboration with Connect Landscape Architecture, the Phillips, Hager and North Garden is named in honour of visionary city builders and philanthropists Art Phillips, Bob Hager and Rudy North. This rooftop garden offers public access to outdoor green spaces with spectacular city views.

The City of Vancouver selected local firm DA Architects & Planners, supported by Moshe Safdie Architects to carry out the architecture on the $15 million renovation that will see 35,000 sq. ft. of public space added to the library.

The specific requirements and unique location of the rooftop garden led to the client choosing Romex D1 2-component resin grouting.

PRODUCT LOCATION

PROJECT NEEDS
  1. Permeable system to allow heavy regional rainfall to be absorbed and not flood the rooftop.
  2. Create a surface capable of supporting larger-scale pedestrian loading for public events and ceremonies, with near elimination of trip hazards and liabilities for users.
  3. A durable and robust solution with reduced maintenance and repair requirements going forward that can remain open to the public year-round.
PROJECT SOLUTION

After thorough analysis and consultation regarding the site requirements, Romex “Rompox D1” 2-component jointing mortar was selected for the project. Our highly durable and permeable product was the perfect choice for the Vancouver Library and delivered the required result for this unique public space.
